Laptop is the window – Desktop is the landscape – Cursor is the horizon, 2000
This was the idea behind my first body of work that was a series of oil on canvas paintings depicting what I called the best known shared landscape in the world, that is the computer desktop and its icons. I also kept going painting other forms of contemporary computer landscapes like desktop wallpapers, software logos, not loaded images, software crack codes, trojan horses and so on.

New New Portrait, 2001
In May 2001 I registered a web domain called Newnewportrait.com, formulating the basis of a personal attitude in making portraits using digital feedback as material. The name Newnewportrait came from “The New New Thing”, the well known book by Michael Lewis. In brief new new portrait is a way to do portraits describing the temporary mental identities of a person (user) and not only his physical aspect. Works made through “digital footsteps” such as email accounts, web stats, desktop icons, workstation environment settings, cookies, wi-fi waves and search engines (and now social networks) can be seen as NewNewPortraits.

Query fill, 2003
Query Fill is a sort of tool to draw with pixel images instead of with classic pixels. I started developing this tool around 2003 when I was working on SkyMan. Query Fill never evolved into a stand alone drawing tool but it was adopted here and there for some projects of mine. How it worked: a keyword (fixed or user submitted) like for instance LOVE, was periodically querying Google Images. The returned images for the word LOVE were downloaded from Google Images, resized to 1 x 1 pixel size and then inserted in some html tables to obtain a specific outline. For instance in SkyMan, this system was adopted to draw the profile of the man watching the clouds (keyword submitted by the visitors of the website) as well as the cloud outlines themselves (images coming from SKY News channel)

This is an update of the very famous Sol LeWitt statement: “The idea becomes a machine that makes the art”

Data Cinema, 2006
Data Cinema is a word I adopted to define a new type of narrative form that I was experimenting around 2005-06 when I was trying to merge Data retrieved from the web and more classic footage. The idea was to create a server-side generated movie that could transform itself (or a part of it) thanks to the data continuously grabbed from the Internet. The server keeps generating new iterations of the original shot uploading them online or into a dedicate archive. In this way the final movie is always different and its Time Based nature expands into a new dimension.
